Climbing Film Tour is back for its 5th season with an awesome selection of short films celebrating the global climbing community. Be the first to catch the North American premiere at artsPlace, with a part of the proceeds supporting Jasper Relief Fund.

Climbing Film Tour is a unique platform for climbers and filmmakers around the world to share their stories with the community.  Join us for a journey around the world.

This season, we’ll follow Ian Elliott, a 72-year-old Australian rock climber defying age stereotypes as he ascends a grade 28/7c route just before his 70th birthday. Kai Lightner, a 12-time national climbing champion, against the backdrop of Jamaica and their emerging climbing community. Meet up with Freya, Leo Houlding’s daughter, who uses climbing as a practice to lean into discomfort and fear to help navigate her neurodiversity and harness its strengths. You’ll be on the edge of your seat in Cedar Wright’s film “Dropping Molly”, following Molly Mitchell’s Roller Coaster Journey to climb “Crank-It”, one of Colorado’s most dangerous routes. We’ll take you north to the ephemeral Scottish land of mixed climbing with Fay and Line and then meet up with Québécois/ Australian Jacques Beaudoin climber and the effort behind a hard trad first ascent up a thin crack in The Gardens of Stone Conservation Area of Newnes Plateau, NSW, Australia. And then, well, a film about Jackson Marvell.

Film Line-Up

Ian

Film Maker: MattRaimondo

Cinematographer: Caleb Ware

“IAN” is a short cinematic portrayal of the incredible 72-year-old Australian rock climber Ian Elliott. Climbing at a level that defies age stereotypes, Ian’s technical skills, strength, and endurance shatter societal norms. His ascent of a grade 28/7c route just before his 70th birthday not only set a personal record but also inspired climbers worldwide, showcasing the extraordinary potential of older athletes.

Jamrock

Film Maker: Gareth Leah

“Jamrock” follows the remarkable journey of Kai Lightner, a 12-time national climbing champion and the visionary founder of “Climb for Change.” Against the backdrop of Jamaica, renowned for its vibrant culture but not traditionally associated with rock climbing, Kai embarks on a transformative mission.

The film delves into the heart of Jamaica’s emerging climbing community, where passion and determination thrive despite limited resources and recognition. As a sport historically dominated by white individuals, Kai seeks to challenge stereotypes and foster inclusivity by bringing the thrill of rock climbing to a diverse range of enthusiasts.

Jackson Marvel

Producer: DECKED

This is Jackson Marvell. He’s totaled 5 trucks, hauled kegs up rock towers, and rarely (if ever) brushed his hair.

Embracing the Grim

Film Maker: Aleksandra Janiak

After conquering massive alpine walls together, Fay and Line head north to the ephemeral Scottish land of mixed climbing. The objectives are ambitious and the weather is fickle, testing the all women team’s perseverance.

This project was conceived and produced by Aleksandra Janiak, Fay Manners and Line Van den Berg. Sadly, Line never had the chance to see it finished.

Mother Earth

Film Maker: Ben Sanford

A climbing film about the pure obsession and effort behind a hard trad first ascent by Québécois/ Australian Jacques Beaudoin. The climb is a beautiful gem, hidden amongst bushland that has been heavily impacted by industrial resource sectors. Grade 31/ 5.13d/ 8B, sixty degrees overhung sporty climbing up a thin crack in The Gardens of Stone Conservation Area of Newnes Plateau, NSW, Australia.

Freya

Film Maker: Natasha Brooks

Leo Houlding's daughter, Freya, uses climbing as a practice to lean into discomfort and fear to help navigate her neurodiversity and harness its strengths.

Climbing for Gold

Film Maker: Vincent Groos

A short documentary about Fré Leys, a Paralympic climber determined to secure victory at the 2023 World Championships in Salt Lake City.
