Join emerging artist Andrea Rizzuti for a closing reception of her exhibition, I Trace Myself, on Friday, August 25 at 6 pm.
From the artist: This body of work explores identity as a work-in-progress; incomplete and evolving; map-like, based on the idea of locating and developing oneself. In these identity maps, suggestions and silhouettes of the figure are layered through the processes of drawing, painting and embroidery.
Andrea Rizzuti is an emerging artist from Calgary, whose work predominantly focuses on the human figure and self-portraiture. The sense of identity that she seeks to depict from her works can be described as ephemeral, transparent, mysterious, and undefined. Her practice has involved many different mediums, including drawing, painting, printmaking, textile arts, installation, photography, and video art. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) and Bachelor of Arts from the University of Calgary in 2017. Her work predominantly focuses on themes of the human figure and the portrait, with the intention of portraying the subject as concealed; lacking a clear identity.
From Rizzuti: “As my thoughts on this sense of self are predominantly influenced by my own personal perspectives and experiences, I define my work as self portraiture. The process of drawing and painting is essential to my creative practice. These processes serve as meditative and contemplative steps in my practice; it becomes relaxing and introspective. I feel best when I spend this calming time alone, as it allows me to connect more with myself, which is relevant to my self portraiture work and exploration of my own sense of identity.”

RISE Emerging Artist Program:
The RISE Emerging Artist Program offers three Alberta artists each year the opportunity to educate, exhibit, sell, and promote their artistic practice within the Bow Valley. Each RISE artist is paired with an artist mentor from the Bow Valley who helps guide the artist with preparation, planning and instillation of their exhibition; as well as their artist talk. RISE exhibitions are free and open to the public.
