Co-founder of the Vic Lewis Band Festival Mike Sakatch passes away

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our friend and colleague, Mike Sakatch, who passed away on August 2.

Mike co-founded the Vic Lewis Band Festival in 1996 and has served as the Artistic Director for the festival since its first year. He was instrumental in growing the event to become Alberta’s largest and longest-running high school band festival. Mike's passion, commitment, and contribution to the festival is immeasurable.

A master band teacher, he has inspired thousands of students through his work with the Vic Lewis festival, and while teaching at Lord Beaverbrook High School in Calgary as well as the Westwinds Music Society.

He was also a strong supporter of the Alberta International Band Festival and was deeply involved with other music organizations like CADME and the Calgary Summer Band Workshop.

We are immensely grateful for Mike's 4 decade long leadership in music education, and we will miss him dearly. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
