*What is a relaxed performance?

Relaxed performance

A relaxed performance is a type of show that is specially adapted to create a more comfortable and welcoming environment for individuals who might find the traditional theatre setting challenging. This might include folks with learning difficulties, autism, sensory communication challenges, or other needs that can make the standard theatre experience overwhelming, although we welcome everyone who thinks they might benefit from this type of environment.

Here are some common adaptations in a relaxed performance:

• Quieter music and reduced loud or surprising sound effects.

• No strobe lighting and sometimes the house lights are not fully turned off.

• A ‘chill-out’ area is often available for anyone who needs to take a break.

• Audience members are allowed to enter and leave the auditorium freely.

• There’s a relaxed attitude towards noise and movement from the audience.

These performances aim to make the arts more accessible and enjoyable for a diversity of folks, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to experience live theatre.
