Canmore International Improv Festival

Next event dates to be announced

artsPlace, 950 8th Avenue, Canmore, Alberta

Mountains, beers, laughs… it was a formula that worked in 2017 and now the Canmore International Improv Festival (CIIF) returns with an expanded line-up of 10 shows at Artsplace.

The second annual Canmore International Improv Festival features an international cast of A-list performers including headline act Showstopper! The Improvised Musical, an Olivier award-winning show from London, England. Norway, France and Holland are all represented along with western Canada’s brightest and funniest improv performers.

Fubar fans will rejoice as Fubar star Dave Lawrence not only performs, but leads a master class in improv. TEDXRFT, a riff on Ted Talks and Keith Johnstone, licensed improv formats Maestro and Theatresports round out the festival.

Festival Co-Artistic Director and Founder Ali Froggatt says, “We are upping our game this year with twice the amount of programming and bringing even more international talent out to the beautiful Canadian Rockies. I can’t decide whether I am more excited to share the sights and charm of my favorite Canadian town with our international guests or to share these incredible improvised acts with the Bow Valley community. I cannot wait, there is so much fun to be had.”

CIIF is adding an original kids’ show Princess WillNOT for Saturday and Sunday matinees. “We had lots of folks ask about kids programming, so we knew this year we wanted to provide something spectacular for kids and families to enjoy.” says Froggatt.

Showstopper! The Improvised Musical

Showstopper! started out at the 2008 Edinburgh Festival in an 89-seat portacabin and since then has gone on to play almost 1000 shows all over the world. It is the first improvised show ever to win a major theatre award (Olivier Award 2016) following its West End run in London 2015-2016.  It enjoyed a series on BBC Radio 4 and has an ongoing residency at The Lyric Theatre in London’s West End as well as regularly touring the UK. It is also the winner of a Chortle Comedy Award for Best Improv, Character or Sketch (2016) and the Broadway World Audience Vote Award for Best Comedy at the Edinburgh Festival 2017.

‘Incredible. So polished it defies belief.’ The Telegraph – 5 stars

‘Having now seen Showstopper! twice, I can testify that not only is each performance achingly funny, it’s a genuinely new full-length musical every time. Top-class creativity in action. Worth seeing again and again.’  - Time Out London Critics’ Choice – 5 stars

‘What an amazing show! The envy and admiration dripping from my pores has already wiped out 3 people. Congrats!’ - Colin Mochrie, Whose Line is It Anyway?

In the duo show Raison d'être we see our main character stuck between two times. The present and the past. In their day-to-day life a memory of old love that keeps crawling back. Using strong character work, physicality, music and movement the story of this past love unfolds in front of the audience's eyes. Who is she? Who is he? Who are they now? Even when love belongs to the past, it is still a present.

WORKSHOPS

SATURDAY JUNE 23 (2 workshops)

3:00 pm - 5:00 pm: Your own cast of 1000s with Gael Perry (France)

There are many ways to work on character creation. You can learn how to maintain your body, how to walk with a cane, how to feel like fire, or one of many other tricks. But what you need to BE somebody different is to FEEL like someone else. This is a workshop about creating many characters (a thousand and more) from nothing, without thinking, and unplugging your brain to be transported by the moment. Using funny exercises and musical inspired scenes, you will learn to create a different body, which will be at the same time natural and surprising for yourself.

Purchase Tickets here for the workshop "Your own cast of 1000s" with Gael Perry (France)

3 pm - 5 pm: Improv for Teens: Heart Surgery For Dummies with Laura Doornerweerd (Amsterdam)
In this workshop you will learn how to bluff every profession. I will teach you the jargon of the mail sorter, the instruments of a surgeon or the technique of a sniper. All this will no longer be a secret for you. In this workshop we focus on the language, the moves and the attitude of at least 10 different professions. Very useful for on stage! An additional advantage: you will improve you firm conviction while improvising and how to smoothly combine moving and acting.
