Artist Statement

Having grown up with a strong passion for exploring the natural environment, my artistic practice often takes footholds on my adventures. The medium of ceramics has the ability to abstractly distil experiences into three-dimensional objects and is directly linked to the materiality of natural formations and phenomena. Emphasizing strongly on formal and conceptual contrasts I seek to convey a sense of harmony to the viewers/users of my work that parallels similar experiences in nature. As an emerging artist, I am continually excited by new possibilities to explore both technical and conceptual research to create ceramic art that encourages connections between the vessel and landscape while subtly referencing our place within it.

Mia Riley is an emerging ceramic artist who has called many Albertan cities, towns and tents her home. She finds inspiration in the transience and landscapes within her life, having moved and lived in various places across western Canada. She is a graduate of the Alberta College of Art and Design where she received the 2016 Board of Governor’s Award for Academic Excellence in Ceramics. Post graduation she completed two residencies at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity researching wood kiln building, alternative making processes and the natural disasters that have affected her home province in the last decade.  Recently she interned at the Harvard Ceramics Program in Boston. She is now practising and teaching in Canmore, AB
