Northern Quarter had quite the amazing 2019. As well as the YYC Music Award nomination, the group were invited to be filmed at Union Hall in Edmonton as part of The Moment, a yet-to-be-released TV show profiling the best of Albertan music.
The band did their first gigs in Calgary at The Blind Beggar, opening for Erwin Vesper, to highly appreciative crowds. A Canada Day appearance on the top deck of a converted London Bus in Canmore (PD3) was a particular highlight for the group. This party style event is now turning into a tradition!
In addition, Northern Quarter opened for Shred Kelly at artsPlace in Canmore in September. Being big fans of the band, this was an amazing experience, in the middle of a snowstorm!
The band were thrilled to include Geoff Hilhorst from JUNO nominated band The Deep Dark Woods on their single 'Fighting For You', which received airtime on CBC's Homestretch. The single received positive reviews, including Great Dark Wonder, and has been included on some notable Spotify playlists as well as Birch Street Radio and The Colorado Phil show.
Northern Quarter formed in May 2017 and have been successfully working as a covers band, blending modern contemporary pop favourites with old school jazz and blues vibes and playing most of the venues in the Bow Valley as well as Calgary, Fernie, Revelstoke, all the while working away writing and recording original songs. This creative effort has resulted in their debut EP COLD DARK NIGHT, which was nominated at this the 2019 YYC Music Awards.
The six-track EP demonstrates the bands eclectic tastes and influences. From Folk-Rock to Indie, to Contemporary Pop, all underpinned by the beautifully smooth vocal talents of singer-songwriter Kerry Hunter, an established artist in her own right. A strong rhythm section held down by husband and wife team Dave and Wendy Crewe complement the intricate and melodic guitars of Carlos Nadeau. In addition, lush orchestration is provided via samples played on a drum pad.
Lyrically their songs range from stories of love and loss, friendship and camaraderie, travel and freedom, and optimism.
Kerry Hunter - Vocals, Guitar
Carlos Nadeau - Guitar
