artsPlace Sensory Cart

Content image

A sensory cart or kit is a collection of items specifically designed to help individuals regulate their senses and emotions. These kits are often used to support neurodivergent individuals (such as those with autism, ADHD, or sensory processing challenges), but they can benefit anyone who may feel overwhelmed or in need of sensory grounding.

At artsPlace, we are committed to creating a welcoming, inclusive, and safe environment for everyone. We hope this sensory kit provides you with tools to help you feel calm and at ease during your visit. We value your feedback—please share your thoughts or suggestions for improvement with our team at the front desk.

What's Typically Included in a Sensory Kit?

A sensory kit can vary depending on its purpose and the individuals it's intended for, but common items include:

Tactile Tools: Stress balls, fidget spinners, or textured items like fabric swatches.

Visual Aids: Items like glasses designed to reduce the intensity of overhead, performance, or movie lighting, making it less overwhelming for the viewer.

Auditory Tools: Noise-canceling headphones, sound machines, or soft music devices.

Proprioceptive Items: Weighted lap pads, stretch bands, or small handheld massagers.

What Is It Used For?

Self-Regulation: To help manage stress, anxiety, or overstimulation.

Focus and Attention: Tools like fidgets or weighted items can assist in improving focus, especially in classroom or work settings.

Calming Overwhelm: For moments when external stimuli become too much, sensory kits can provide grounding and relief.

Exploration and Learning: For kids, sensory kits can encourage discovery through touch, sight, and sound, promoting development.

What’s in Our Sensory Cart?

Wobble Seats and Footrests: These provide comfort while seated and offer gentle, sensory-stimulating movement for those who may need to fidget or stay active while sitting.

Weighted Blanket: Designed to help calm the nervous system and provide a sense of security and comfort.

Headphones and Earplugs: Available in both kids' and adults' sizes, these are perfect for reducing external noise when it becomes overstimulating.

Eyeglasses: Offered in varying sizes and lenses, these help to dull overhead lights or bright lights from performances or movies.

Fidget Toys and Plush Toys: Ideal for comfort and self-regulation, providing a soothing tactile experience.

Colouring Pages and Books: A calming way to redirect focus and engage in a quiet, relaxing activity.
