September 26, 2020, 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm | Saturday
Program Fee: FREE
Curated by Bow Valley musicians Dave Crewe of Northern Quarter and Jake Posacki of Zebra, this side-splitting singer-songwriter soiree will feature some of the best local talent!
We've gathered 5 of Canmore's brightest singer-songwriters, one very funny man, and a bunch of musicians to bring you a night of music, comedy and collaboration. Ireland Summit, Mari Hill, Phillip A. Nugent, Seth Anderson and John Van Hal will perform their own material with a twist - the backing of a full band. A diverse range of genres will be on display from the soaring melodies of Ireland and Mari to the pounding pop of Phillip and the raw punch of Seth and John.
Scott Dumas will host the festivities and tie the night together with a short comedy set.
This event is part of the Canmore Festival of Art & Creativity, which features 10 days of FREE creative programming - learn more here!
Meet the Artists
Ireland Summit is an indie folk singer-songwriter local to the Bow Valley. She loves to travel and spend time in Tofino, BC where she once lived, and on the coast of California, which inspires a lot of her songwriting. Ireland loves both coast and mountain life and likes to offer a variety of covers and originals.
Mari Rose Hill
Locally brewed musician, Mari Rose tells a story with her poetic lyrics and authentic small town character. This young lady's heartfelt songs are inspired predominantly by Joni Mitchell's work as well as Joanna Newsom. Her honest exploration of life's subtleties, accented by her angelic voice will surely sweep you away.
Philip Alexander Nugent
The seeds of Phill Nugent’s folk-rock sound – sometimes whimsical and sometimes gritty – took root in the northern Canadian wilderness where he was raised. The Yukon-born artist’s background in musical theatre (he first took to the stage at age five) later evolved into songwriting and self-taught guitar. The juxtapositions that inspire Phill’s songs, like the comfort of family and the freedom of travel, or the solitude of nature and connection with an audience, weave rich storylines into his lyrics.
John Van Hal
Multi instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, John Van Hal has lived in Canmore for the last fifteen years. Raised in Toronto, his musical journey started when he bought a guitar and travelled to California with it. He learned to play that guitar on the streets of Berkeley and San Francisco, sleeping rough on the university land and busking all day. He lived the life of a hobo troubadour for years, hitching around the continent, playing his songs. After years of attempts to contact the devil to sell his soul for guitar skills and failing to reach him, he decided to settle down in Canmore, where he has hosted jam nights at various local venues ever since. He would like to state that if the devil is reading this, his offer still stands. And he doesn't even care about making the ghost of Hendrix weep upon hearing his skills. He just wants live music back again.
Seth Anderson has spent his time on earth on a journey; in search of his truth, purpose, and an understanding of the world around him and his place in it. His songwriting offers an honest view of life from a unique perspective that has stemmed from years of travelling, moving from town to town, city to city, highway to highway; the high peaks, the low valleys, and all the spaces in between. Through all of this, there maintains one common thread- a bellow for love and hope. Few artists have such an intense emotional connection to their craft and this is where he shines. His delivery is genuine, yet at times ferocious with both conviction and vulnerability.
"There’s a rebellious spirit to Seth Anderson’s music that makes you want to break all the rules around you and finally get out into the world to live the life you’ve always dreamed of having. It’s sweet release that his music offers that makes his sound so addictive…”
