Elizabeth Sorochan

Elizabeth Sorochan is a passionate artist with a lifelong dedication to the ancient art of pysanky. Introduced to this artform by her Ukrainian grandmother, she turns her intention each springtime to the communal spirit of egg writing, where possibility unfolds line by line with each symbol and each colour.

For Elizabeth, the design process is an unfolding of eternal truths, blending technical precision with mystical depth, and drawing from a canon of traditional symbolism that reaches back to Neolithic cultures.

There is a legend that tells the story of an evil monster in the Carpathian mountains; in that story, the more pysanky people make, the tighter the chains are wrapped around the monster, keeping it at bay so that it doesn’t destroy the world. Entranced by the infinite round canvas, the beauty, the chance to create an intentional world, and of course holding evil at bay, Elizabeth writes eggs annually and attends an international pysanky gathering.

Elizabeth also paints, brews, and plays music. She resides in Banff with her beloved husband and son.
